Which acid is present in tomato?

  By GK Planet Team

Acid present in tomato

Tomato contains more than 10 different types of acids, but two account for a large percentage of the total:
  1. citric acid
  2. malic acid.
Tomatoes also contain another essential acid, ascorbic acid, which is better known by its common name: vitamin C
Citric acid is a weak organic acid has the chemical formula C6H8O7 . It can be found in citrus fruits ( like oranges). It is used by organisms for Krebs cycle. It acts like a preservative when added to food. It is also used to add a sour (acidic) taste to foods and soft drinks. In the European Union it is known as E 330, as a food additive.

Q. Name the organic acid present in tomato is :
  1. Tartaric acid
  2. Malic acid
  3. Lactic acid
  4. Oxalic acid
Answer: Oxalic Acid
Tomatoes contain only a “moderate” amount of oxalic acid (apprx. 50 mg per 100 g). As tomato ripens, the amount of Vitamin C decreases and the amount of oxalic acid increases.

Q. Name the acid presents in the following:
  1. Tomato
  2. vinegar
  3. Tamarind
Answer:
The acid present in tomato: Mainly citric acid & Malic Acid
The acid present in vinegar: Acetic Acid
The acid present in Tamarind: Tartaric Acid

Vinegar is an aqueous solution of acetic acid and trace chemicals that may include flavorings. Vinegar typically contains 5–8% acetic acid by volume.
Tamarind acidic nature is due to tartaric acid content (IUPAC-2,3-dihydroxybutanedioic acid). Tartaric acid, an antioxidant, is the reason why tamarind is sour. Tartaric acid is also present in grapes and bananas, but not in citrus fruits.
