In an apple, the fleshy receptacle forms the main edible part.
The main edible part of an apple is actually the juicy receptacle of a flower i.e., thalamus. This is also the reason why apple is called false fruit.

The fruit forms in the ovary of the flower by the process of fertilization and zygote formation is called true fruit.

When fruit formation occurs other than ovary and flower organelles like calyx, corolla, thalamus etc take place then it is called false fruit. Examples- Apple, jack fruit, pear etc.
Apple is called a false fruit because it is not the part of the ovary which develops into fruits but Apple is not developed in the ovary but it is thalamus that develops into a fruit.
