Eager to see the textile industry in full expansion and the port attracting foreign ships, Sher Khan Lodi, the governor of the region, contacted François Martin who accepted the principle of an establishment and started a correspondence which lasted twenty months. In December 1673, Bellanger de Lespinais paid a visit to the Muslim chief at Valkondapuram who accepted the transfer of factory at that place. In February 1673, he landed at Pondichérry; he left the place on the 6th September of the following year, after having entrusted the factory to François Martin who made of Pondicherry the main French settlement in India.
