Who is the only person to be honoured with both 'Bharat Ratna' and 'Nishan-e-Pakistan'?

  By GK Planet Team
Q. The only indian to have won both the nishan-e-pakistan and the bharat ratna.

Morarji Desai

Morarji Desai (29 February 1896 – 10 April 1995) was an Indian independence activist and served between 1977 and 1979 as the 4th Prime Minister of India for the government formed by the Janata Party.
  • Political party‎: ‎Janata Dal‎ (1988–1995)
  • Awards‎: ‎Bharat Ratna‎; ‎Nishan-e-Pakistan
  • Profession‎: ‎Activist; ‎Politician
Desai was the only Indian national to be conferred with Pakistan's highest civilian award, Nishan-e-Pakistan, which was conferred on him by President Ghulam Ishaq Khan in 1990. In 1991 he was awarded Bharat Ratna (Highest Civilian Award of India) along with Sardar Vallabhai Patel and Rajive Gandhi.

The Nishan-e-Pakistan is the highest of civil awards and decorations given by the Government of Pakistan for the highest degree of service to the country and nation of Pakistan. The award was established on 19 March 1957. The Nishan-e-Pakistan, unlike other honours, is a highly restricted and most prestigious award

Morarji Desai was the only Indian awarded with the Nishan-e-Pakistan.

The Bharat Ratna is the highest civilian award of the Republic of India. Instituted in 1954, the award is conferred "in recognition of exceptional service/performance of the highest order", without distinction of race, occupation, position, or sex. The award was originally limited to achievements in the arts, literature, science, and public services, but the government expanded the criteria to include "any field of human endeavour" in December 2011.

There is no formal provision that recipients of the Bharat Ratna should be Indian citizens. It has been awarded to a naturalised Indian citizen, Mother Teresa in 1980, and to two non-Indians, Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan of Pakistan in 1987 and the former South African president Nelson Mandela in 1990.
